Legendary rock and roll radio DJ Scott Muni passed away recently and I really regret not posting anything about it at the time so to try and make up for that lack of judgement click here to listen to Scott in his prime on WOR-FM on October 8, 1966. Sorry Scott. Enjoy.

Cool Blog Alert! Drugburn

November 30, 2004 by Mark · Leave a Comment

I came across this blog after reading the author’s comments about being pissed off because I didn’t mention The Out Crowd in my post on Elephant Stone Records. Well he had a valid point so I’ll feature them a bit later in the week but I checked out his blog and I like it. Drugburn is subtitled “Taking music to make drugs to” and it has all kinds of interesting musings on punk rock, cool bands and American garage rock. I also think the guy is from Ottawa which was my old stomping grounds so he gets bonus marks for that alone. Check it out. It’s a good read with some cool downloads as well.

Elvis vs. The Mummy - “Bubba Ho-Tep”

November 30, 2004 by Janet Branagan · Leave a Comment

Bubbahotep_1 If you’ve ever wondered what really happened to Elvis and JFK, a hilarious movie called "Bubba Ho-Tep" provides an explanation that is nearly as plausible and way more entertaining than anything else that’s ever been offered.  It stars Bruce Campbell as a bitter, introspective Elvis with a bum hip and Ossie Davis, in a role that will truly surprise you, as a paranoid JFK who, among other things, is convinced that Lyndon Johnson is trying to kill him.  They live in a nursing home in rural Texas, where they team up to battle the mummy of an evil Egyptian pharoah that sustains itself by eating the souls of the home’s residents.
The best thing about "Bubba Ho-Tep" is that it isn’t the farcical, slapstick comedy you might expect.  The humor is clever and imaginative, and through the extensive use of voice over and flashbacks, the movie portrays the aged Elvis in a surprisingly sensitive and often poignant manner.  To say any more would spoil most of the movie’s surprises, but if the premise sounds like your idea of fun, you should definitely put "Bubba Ho-Tep" at the top of your "to rent" list.  Just one word of warning–it’s meant for adults, so you may want to watch it before deciding if it’s appropriate for your kids.

Riot on Sunset Strip

One of the all time classic rock and roll movies "Riot on Sunset Strip" is available at the phenomenal rock and roll video store The Video Beat. This movie has it all: hippies, pot, sugar cube LSD, psychedelic ’60s and fuzz garage punk all mixed together into a rock and roll film classic. Another fine late night movie selection for the true rock and roll film connoisseur. Two thumbs up.

  18. Queens Of The Stone Age ‘No One Knows’
  19. Guns N’ Roses ‘Paradise City’
  20. Rage Against The Machine ‘Killing In The Name’

I’m surprised that the old warhorse “Satisfaction” is not in there or “You Really Got Me” or a bunch of others that I won’t bore you with. Obviously the majority of the selections are of the hard rock or metal genres but you would think that even something like “I Feel Fine” would crack the top 20. Ah well, guitarists speak up!

“Artists Still Lose Out in Record Deals”

November 29, 2004 by Mark · Leave a Comment

The Oracle Online has an interesting article called Artists Still Lose Out in Record Deals which basically argues that these newly emerging major label digital only labels are perhaps not as advantageous to the artist as they appear to be at first blush. You decide but at least there are alternatives to the alternatives as the article points out.

“We All Need Some Compensation”

November 29, 2004 by Mark · Leave a Comment

The school kids involved in singing the classic chorus to Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall” are suing for royalties now that the record is a bona fide classic. Can’t say that I blame them really. It’s hard to imagine the song without them, although at the same time that song has taken the place of “Money” as the most over-played Pink Floyd song ever. Why don’t I ever hear “See Emily Play” or “Arnold Layne”?
