The Rock and Roll Report is a place to go when you are tired of the same music played over and over on commercial rock radio. Playing great rock and roll from indie and unsigned bands.

Well as I wind things down over the next few days and take my Christmas break I would just like to wish everybody a wonderful and safe holiday. It’s been an interesting year here at The Rock and Roll Report with the move from Typepad to a server hosted by Canadian indie music store Sugartune and finally kicking off the Rock and Roll Report Podcast.

Rock and Roll Report Blitz: Avi and Celia

December 17, 2007 by Mark · Leave a Comment

avi-and-celia.jpg

I was recently in Burlington, Vermont (a seriously cool little town) and as I was walking back to my hotel late on a Saturday night I heard some amazing blues harp emanating from this little bar on the Church Street Marketplace. Unfortunately I couldn’t stick around but I finally tracked down the band and it turns out that it was Avi and Celia, a duo who split their time between Burlington and Boston.

Now what do they sound like? iTunes on my laptop pegged them as unclassifiable which is one way to look at them. I suppose you can say that they take bits and pieces from the blues, bluegrass, folk, Americana and rock and roll and make it their own but that’s beside the point in my book. You can tell right away that this music comes from the very fiber of their souls and it is absolutely spellbinding to listen to.

Check out some of their stuff on their MySpace page at http://www.myspace.com/aviandcelia and get ready for something a bit different but man the groove on “Soak Her In” is addicting! I’m a fan.

How to Listen to the Rock and Roll Report Podcast

December 14, 2007 by Mark · Leave a Comment

rrr_144.jpgThe response to the Rock and Roll Report Podcast has been fantastic from both listeners, bands and indie labels and it definitely has been encouraging and satisfying that people are making space on their MP3 players for a blast of what I consider to be primo rock and roll from unsigned and indie label bands. For that I thank you all. Some listeners (or potential listeners) have been having issues though with either what a podcast is or how exactly you listen to it so I thought I would give you a little primer on the many ways you can enjoy the Rock and Roll Report Podcast. And by the way, the next podcast will be out on December 19th, 2007.

What is a Podcast?

A podcast is simply a downloadable MP3 file containing numerous types of entertainment similar to a radio show. The cool thing about podcasts are that you are in control so you can listen to them whenever and wherever you choose on anything from your MP3 player to your phone to your computer and on to your stereo if it is so equipped. There are also great video podcasts that operate in the same way as their audio counterpart.

Listening to the Rock and Roll Report Podcast

You can listen to the podcast in a number of ways.

1. Probably the easiest way is to click on the brown “play” button at the top of the show notes for each episode. Clicking on this button will allow you to listen to the complete podcast streaming right from the The Rock and Roll Report. This is a Flash player so if you don’t see it on your screen there could be a problem with your Flash installation.
2. Download the MP3 file yourself. If you right-click on the “Audio MP3” graphic or “Download” link right bellow the Flash player you can save the whole podcast to your hard drive.
3. Subscribe in iTunes. By far the most convenient method is to subscribe to the podcast since once you have done so you will never need to worry about missing a show. I recommend using iTunes because it features by far the most podcast listings on the Net and it is drop dead easy to use to manage your music. You can use the link below to subscribe to the Rock and Roll Report Podcast in iTunes.

4. Subscribe using another “podcatcher” program. If you don’t want to use iTunes you can use a program like Juice Reciever to subscribe to the podcast. Simply copy and paste this RSS feed into the appropriate place in the software and voila, you are done.

Odds and Sods: The Rock and Roll Geek on Tour, Versailles Records Looking For Some Unsigned Bands, Joe Camel’s Illicit Affair with Rolling Stone Magazine and Keith Richards Makes Rudolph Run

The Rock and Roll Geek is on tour

michael-butler-with-bass.JPG

I am a huge fan of the Rock and Roll Geek Show podcast. Hosted by Michael Butler, bassist for American Heartbreak and currently on tour with Jetboy, Michael is one of the original rock and roll podcasters and he is always a blast to listen to. He is currently on the road with Jetboy on the Stephen Pearcy/Jetboy/Antidivison tour and he is doing a video podcast chronicling their adventures as they rock and roll all over the States. The last time I checked they were playing a strip bar in Omaha I believe and the drummer for Antidivision had just quit. If you ever wanted to know what it was like to go on tour as part of a working indie band then you gotta start watching this. Always a lot of fun and nothing is sugar coated. This podcast is a must for any true fan of rock and roll.

Versailles Records Looking for Some Unsigned Bands for Tribute Album

(PR) Versailles Records is seeking a handful of unsigned bands to round out several star-studded tributes planned for release in 2008 to Kiss, Led Zeppelin, and Whitesnake. Collectively, these tributes feature current/former members of bands including Whitesnake, Anthrax, Dio, David Coverdale Band, Kiss, Badlands, L.A. Guns, Ratt, House of Lords, Blue Murder, TSO, Warrant, Slash’s Snakepit, Every Mother’s Nightmare, Alice Cooper Band, Lillian Axe, Riot, Dangerous Toys, Pretty Boy Floyd, and a host of others. In seeking to feature new millennium rock/metal bands among the aforementioned stars of the genre, we have approx. 2-3 slots open per-tribute. Interested bands should submit a weblink (website, myspace, etc) to versaillesrecords2006@yahoo.com for consideration.

Joe Camel’s Illicit Affair with Rolling Stone Magazine

indie-rock-universe.jpg
It seems that Rolling stone Magazine and R.J. Reynolds Tobacco are under fire for a recent promotion featured in the 40th Anniversary edition of the mag. According to an article in The Daily Swarm, the magazine features a fold-out poster that may have crossed the line between mixing advertising and editorial content. The Daily Swarm explained, “The fold-out poster – a bizarre illustration that lists dozens of Pitchfork-centric bands grouped around representations of various planets and animals – is nestled in between five pages of advertisements for ‘The Farm,’ Camel Cigarettes’ indie band and label-focused promotion. If you are like most indie music fans who paid any attention to those pages, you likely assumed that the ‘Indie Rock Universe’ poster was part and parcel of the Camel advertising campaign; if not, the message was clear…Camel’s got indie rock’s back.”

Of course everybody is denying that there was collusion and it is all an innocent misunderstanding but Reynolds has halted any further advertising of “The Farm” and indie labels are demanding an apology. This IS Rolling Stone Magazine we are talking about right? Who the hell reads RS for info on indie bands?

Keith Richards Makes Rudolph Run

Just in time for Christmas you can buy the legendary Keith Richards version of Run Rudolph Run, recorded around the time of mega-heroin use and Some Girls. Just like his idol Chuck Berry…

Book Review: Bomp! Saving The World One Record At A Time

December 13, 2007 by Mark · Leave a Comment

“The point of a music revolution is not to replace today’s pop stars with a new slate; it is to kick out the jams! Riot in the streets! Do it now! Etc. It’s all about direct engagement, and the result of all that activity should be a better time for all, a party that will keep everyone coming back to do it some more. This is what rock & roll at its best can provide – leading to the idea that perhaps rock & roll itself should be seen not as a genre, not as a mere noun or even a verb, but also as a process.”

Greg Shaw

bomp-book.jpg

Prophetic words from a man that embodied rock and roll, with all of its contradictions and complexities, pure and simple. I have actually quoted these words on this very blog before and it always gives me solace to read them in this day and age of niches and genres and sub-genres. That it was uttered by Greg Shaw, a poster boy for independent rock and roll if there ever was one makes it that much more poignant.

ckut.jpgWell I conducted my 6 month review Monday night on Rock and Roll Report Radio playing a selection of stand out tracks that I had played since June. 6. Little Nympho - Teflon Man - The Naked Apes

  11. Rooftop Sniper - s/t - The Brown Hornets
  12. Here To Stay - Demo - Chop Suicide

Next week I will be back on the air on Monday, December 17th with the 3 Amigos and then on the 19th I will be releasing another Rock and Roll Report Podcast. I will then take a breather with the podcasts until early in the New Year, probably releasing one on January 9th, 2008.

Take care and thanks for listening!

Released December, 1975 on Electra Records

Produced by Roy Thomas Baker and Queen

Band members: Brian May-guitars, harp, ukelele Roger Taylor-percussion, vocals

John Deacon- bass, double bass, electric piano Freddie Mercury-piano, vocals

Recorded at six different studios, “A Night At The Opera” was one of the most expensive albums ever made. The liner notes proudly proclaim “No Synthesizers!”, and it’s true, though hard to tell by just listening to it. Queen were the masters of multi-layered sound, from the guitars to the vocals. All four members wrote songs for the album, and they all had a hand in producing it, creating a wide variety of sounds for one album. “Bohemian Rhapsody” is probably the best known song, and has the distinction of being a number one single two different times. The song was written entirely by Freddie Mercury on piano, and the other band members then recorded their parts on their respective instruments.

One of the most original rock bands ever, Queen has continued to record after a long hiatus following the death of Freddie Mercury in 1991. Their new singer is Paul Rodgers, who formerly sang with Free, Bad Company, and The Firm.
